How I found inspiration for ‘What happened to Grandad’s Teeth?’
A sunny day in July 2020, the taste of freedom from being locked in during a global pandemic. My in-laws had come to stay and we decided it would be the perfect weather to go to the beach. Our perfect day swiftly changed.
An oil leak in the boot of the car, meant our boot seats were soaked. My poor mother in law in her white t-shirt and beige shorts, looked from the get go that she had had an accident. As we arrived on the beach where my wife and youngest daughter had a screaming match over the ‘mum packing the wrong costume.’ I get an ice cream and managed to drop it! My mothers in laws oil stained pants baked in the sun for most of the day.
Grandad decided it would be a good idea to take my daughters into the sea for a swim. I thought I would get five-minute peace. But oh no! My children start calling for me and waving. I wave back then my father in law beckons me down. Up I get thinking I’m being asked to join them for a swim. But it appears the sea wanted to join in the fun that day.
It seems that a rouge large wave knocked all three of them over including Grandad. The force of the wave had sent Grandads teeth flying into the shore line. We spent the rest of the day looking for the teeth. asking the lifeguards if they had seen any stray false teeth was a particular highlight. As much as we all looked we couldn’t find any teeth.
On the drive home we joked about what could have happened to Grandad’s teeth. I took some mental notes and added a couple of ideas of my own to the adventures of Grandads teeth. Thinking nothing of it, sent it off to a publishers, Bumble Bee Publishers who were the first to jump onboard with the tale and teaming back up with Eve Yarnton we created the magical underwater of Grandad’s Teeth.
I hope you enjoy this epic tale, as big as the ocean and as big as Grandad's smile!
